Jefferson expands the United States

Thomas Jefferson believed in a strict construction of the Constitution -- following the Constitution exactly as written. However, when he became president, he had the opportunity to add land to the US from Spain in what is now western Florida, and most famously, add the Louisiana Territory from France. As you can imagine, his purchases of land from foreign governments, which were not one of the powers of the presidency, were very controversial. The political cartoon below is an example of one person's opinion of Jefferson's policies.

Start by entering your period and first names, last initials (example: P1 Sally A & Billy B)
Then answer these questions as completely as possible:

1. List all the images, actions, symbols and words that the cartoonist uses
2. What do the symbols and actions mean?
3. What is the main idea of the political cartoon, or the message that the cartoonist is trying to express?

IN THIS PICTURE THERE IS A VERY NEGATIVE FIELD TO THOMAS JEFFERSON BECAUSE HIS WHOLE PICTURE IS PRETTY MUCH HAVING A HORRIBLE SAYING O HIM. THE IMAGE SHOWS A SPANISH GOVERNOR HOLDING UP TO DIFFERENT FLAGS WITH FLORIDA. THOMAS IS THROWING UP IN THE PICTURE AND HIS WHOLE BODY IS THE SHAPE OR AS A PRAIRE DOG. I THINK THE MAIN IDEA FOR THIS WHOLE POLITICAL CARTOON IS THAT THOMAS JEFFERSON WAS A JERK A SELFISH JERK WHO ONLY CARED ABOUT HIMSELF.

This political cartoon shows that everyone around him is showing Thomas Jefferson the wrong way to lead the country. This is a political cartoon from just after Jefferson purchased the Louisiana Territory from France, and he was trying to purchase Florida from Spain.
The cartoon shows Napoleon, the French leader, "stinging" Jefferson. When someone makes a deal and gets stung, it means that they made a really bad deal. Now the Spanish diplomat seems to be trying to fool Jefferson as well, by dancing around, which makes the facts confused, and holding maps of Florida.
According to the cartoonist, Jefferson doesn't understand he's being tricked, and keeps wasting money on these land deals. The caption at the bottom re-states the main ideas, as Jefferons is stung by the French "hornet" and deceived by the diplomatic "puppet."
This is a particularly interesting cartoon since the textbook says that Jefferson made a good deal in making the Louisiana Purchase, but you can see from the cartoon that there was at least some disagreement at the time.

The westward expansion of the united states was right at the time because the Mexicans and the native Americans didn't know how to rule the land they owned. In document 1 it stated that the Mexicans were "imbecile and distracted" from ruling their territory. Also in document 2 united states didn't want to get in a war with Mexico because they "shed American blood upon American soil" just cause the united states wanted their land but Mexico would give their land to them if they beat them in war.In document 3 it was right to take over the Mexican territory because "ignorant cowards and profligate ruffians have ruled it for the last twenty-five years" and didn't care about the land anymore. Finally,The united states will keep on growing in greater heights that they didn't imagine and were lied just little civilization in north America and now lies a beautiful country. That's why it was okay for the U.S to take over other countries land at the time.
