Why did some American colonists support the King of England?

When most people think of the events leading up to the American Revolution, they think of the Patriots, who opposed the King. However, as you have read, about 1/3 of American colonists supported the King, and opposed independence. They were known as Loyalists, and their story is not as well known.

Your assignment is to create an extended paragraph that answers these questions:
  • Why did the Loyalists support the King and oppose independence? Be sure to cite specific primary sources, and use at least one brief quote.
  • How do you think that Patriots might have responded to the Loyalists' arguments?
  • Which side do you think had a better argument, and why?

Loyalists supported the King and opposed independence because they thought England had been treating them well and encouraging them since the beginning, "The peace and security we have already enjoyed under great Britain's protection."

I think Patriots might've responded to the Loyalists' argument by stating that America needs to be independent and establish a republic of their own, as stated by a patriot, "…declare ourselves Independent, and set up a Republic of our own…"

I think the Loyalists had a better argument because they were choosing the powerful side, and it is true and stated that they had helped them move to America, along with sending over some protection and encouragement to their industry. This is proved by the following sentences stated by a Loyalist, "… howling wilderness turned into a flourishing and populous country… is this not due to the way in which the colonies have been treated since the beginning?"

The Loyalist supported the king because England would give them security."The piece and security we have already enjoyed under great Britain's protection..."They would oppose independence because without the protection of England they would have to battle on their own against other countries."But as soon as we declare independence, ruthless war with all it's aggravated horror will ravage our once happy land."

We think that the Patriots might have responded aggressively or upset because the Loyalists' were supporting the king unlike them who disliked the king.

We think that the Patriots had a better argument because after war the king forced them to pay taxes.

The reason why the loyalists support the king and oppose independence would be because the loyalist know that once America becomes independent there will be war and without the assistance of England the americans will surely not win the war. So the loyalist know if American because independent that they will be taking a huge risk."But as soon as we declare independence ruthless war will follow."

The way that patriots would respond to the loyalists argument would go "We Americans need to stop being dependent on England and we must spread our wings and fly. We must become independent even if there is some wars and challenges during the way."

In my opinion the side that had the better argument would be the patriots. The reason why I say this is because America is England's child and like every child they must leave the nest and fly. In this case it would be becoming independent. America can't be dependent forever if they do they will never become there own country.

Loyalist supported the king and opposed independence because they didn't want to be against the british government which offered them various things such as peace between them as stated in the letter in the newspaper in year 1775. Another offered thing by the government was protection from foreign land which in the other words meaning that if they received freedom from England it meant loosing all assistance from the British Government and be seen to them as rebels which comes down to King George's famous statement "take down the rebellions or else."

Patriots would have answered to the loyalist by making the claim that if they decided to stay and follow the British Government that would have to follow their expectations and way of living. Unlike if you join the patriots who do want freedom you will be able to live free from all expectations of England and its king.
We believe that the loyalist had a better argument than the patriots because they didn't want to risk being hated by King George and all the assistance they had from the British Government.

The American colonists support the king of England because they know that if they are not loyal, parts of their land will be ruined and most likely a "ruthless war will be started"

The thoughts or beliefs of the patriots and the loyalist created a conflict because they believed in different ideas. The patriots had wanted independence and the loyalist's enjoyed the Great Britain's protection.

My partner and I would chose the Loyalist side because we wouldn't want anything bad to happen to us like the patriots explained what would happen to them if they chose to be independent.

1. The loyalist support the king and oppose independence because if americans became independent they will face wars and not win. They would also face obstacles during the trip of independence. "But as soon as we declare independence, ruthless war, with all its aggravated horrors, will ravage our once happy land."

2. The patriots and the loyalist's had an argument because both colonies believed in something different. ''The loyalist's had enjoyed Great Britain's protection and the patriots had wanted independence and they did not want to be loyalist's".

3. We think the patriots had a better argument because Americans were Englands children and every child wanted to become independent.

The loyalists supported the king and opposed independence because they would lose all assistance from England and if they had war England would win."By declaring independence, we would instantly lose all assistance from our friends in England."

I think that the Patriots might have responded to the Loyalists' arguments by telling them that they need to be independent and need their own government. They would also respond by tar and feathering them.

I think the Patriots have a better argument because they needed to be independent instead of listening to the King's unfair laws.

The loyalist supported the king and opposed independence because they knew that if they weren't loyal they would easily loose all assistance from their mother country and would be seen as rebels and treated accordingly.Another reason why the loyalist supported the king was because if the colonies declared independence this would lead to wars and lots of casualties. The Patriots might have responded differently to the loyalist's arguments because they believed that the colonies should be independent and that the British government had no authority to control the colonies. My brief quote that supports my response is "But as soon as we declare independence, ruthless wars, aggravated horrors will ravage our happy land." This quote states the consequences that the colonies would suffer if they didn't obey England. The side that had the better argument was the Patriots because they had the right to have freedom and independence in their colonies.

Some America colonist support the King of England because they had everything that they needed and wanted. The loyalist supported the king and oppose independence because they were going to revolt from Great Britain which declared themselves independence.''suppose we were to revolt from Great Britain, declare ourselves independence, and set up a Republic of our own. They also wanted a republic of there own.they had responded to the loyalist' argument because America had to be independent and have a republic of there own.The side that that i thinks better is the a document because no one will be their if their country becomes attacked european wont help at all. another reason is that they would go into war and not help each other out. other than france would still be friends but france just made peace with the british and might interrupted the peace and risk another war with england. also loyalists backed up why they are loyal to england and won't disobey them because many blood would shed into war. also the risk of when they become independent that they might fall and corrupt which by that time england won't be at their side to help them on that risk of failure.

I believe the Loyalists supported the King and oppose independence because they didn't want to go to war with England. They knew if they went to war many of them would die. They were also afraid because they would lose all support from England. Charles Inglis said that if they declare independence they would instantly lose all assistance from England.
The Patriots were probably frustrated with the Loyalists. They were frustrated because they probably thought that the Loyalists were close minded and they weren't seeing the bigger picture. They felt that the Loyalists weren't seeing the unjust in the British rule.
I believe the Loyalists had better reasoning because if decided to appose the King they would most likely go to war and many of them would die. The Loyalists also said that if they went against them they would lose all support. So i believe the Loyalists had a better argument, but i still supported the Patriots.

Loyalist support the king and oppose independence because then they will stop saying anything in our favor. a quote that we used was "...stop saying anything in our favor, for they would be seen as rebels, and treated accordingly." The side that had the better argument were the loyalists because they had better reasonable answers that supported why they should be loyal to the king.

The loyalists support the king and opposed independence because they don't want to loose protection against the king. If they do, "ruthless wars, with all its aggravated horrors will take over their happy land. Also, innocent people will be killed and thousands reduced to beggary and wretchedness."

Patriots might have responded to the loyalists' arguments by trying to declare themselves independent. If they were to declare themselves independent, many devastations will happen such as: loosing all assistance from their friends in England and they would be seen as rebels and treated accordingly. Also, that seacoasts and ports will be ruined.

The loyalists supported the king because they had protection and didn't want to risk losing that protection. They also might've been scared to speak up and create a war that they were afraid they would lose. I think this because in document A Charles Inglis says " … ruthless war, with all its aggravated horrors, will ravage our once happy land."

Patriots wanted freedom and independence along with a republic of their own so that they could lead it "correctly".

We believe that the Patriots had a better argument because they have a right to want their own freedom and be independence instead of people telling them what to do.We think this because they are their own people and can make decisions on their own .

The Loyalists support the King and oppose independence because they were still loyal to England and the king, even once they left. They believed that England still ruled them so they stayed loyal. How we think that Patriots might have responded to the Loyalists' arguments is that the British government has been fair in running the empire and the different acts that are helpful to the colonies more than they harm them. Who we think had a better argument would be the patriots because all they wanted to do was have their own country because the king was treating them unfairly.

My opinion is that the patriots had a better argument because they wanted to make their own organization so they won't have to follow rules like paying taxes,be loyal to the king, and more. Patriots wanted to have their own rules.

The Loyalists supported Great Britain and oppose independence because if they declared independence the colonies would lose the help they could obtain from Great Britain. "Declaring independence, we would lose all the assistance from our friends in England." Loyalists also assumed that if you declared independence, there would be a ruthless war. "Declaring independence, ruthless war with all its aggravated horrors, will ravage our once happy land." Great Britain provides peace and security to everyone. "The peace and the security we have already enjoyed under Great Britain."Great Britain provided protection for their jobs. "…encourage our industry and protect us from foreign countries." "If we declare independence, Great Britain would stop saying anything in our favor, for the would be seen as rebels, and treated accordingly." I think that the patriots felt that the English were taking over their land and assigning many new laws. For example, the stamp act, proclamation and other laws. That is why i would be against the king of Great Britain.

M. Albert said...

Mr. Albert's response:

The Loyalists had three main arguments. According to Rev. Ingles, opposing the King was nothing less than suicide -- he says that "torrents of blood" would be spilled, and most of that blood would be American blood. He also says that the world is a dangerous place, and by breaking away from the king, Americans would no longer have his protection. Finally, the writer in the "Pennsylvania Packet" points would that in spite of the problems facing the Americans in 1775, the colonies had "flourished" under the protection of the British army and navy -- and those protections would disappear if the colonists succeeded in braking away.

If a Patriot heard those arguments, he or she would surely disagree. The Boston Massacre, where Americans died at the hands of the British, showed that we really weren't being protected, we were being killed. As for the colonies flourishing economically under England, the many taxes, such as the Stamp Act and the tea tax, showed England would no longer allow the colonies to grow -- the king finally realized we had something he wanted -- our money.

Finally, while I recognize that the Loyalists had reasonable ideas, the British were taking away our freedoms, and since the King was not treating us like Englishmen and Englishwomen with rights to representative government, America should take the risk and rebel.
