Declaration of Independence

Our students have been analyzing the Declaration of Independence, and have been looking at the work of two historians, Bernard Bailyn and Howard Zinn, who answered the question, "Why did the Founders write the Declaration of Independence?"

Now, the students will explain which historian makes a better case. In a well written paragraph,  the students will respond to this prompt:

  • Contrast Bernard Bailyn and Howard Zinn's ideas about the Declaration of Independence
    • Explain the main ideas of Bailyn and Zinn. Use short quotes from each historian to support your writing
    • Find one example from the text of the Declaration that supports Bailyn, and 1 that supports  Zinn. Use short quotes from the text, and explain how each supports the historian
    • In a short conclusion, explain which historian is correct, and why

Zinn's ideas compared to Bailyn's are much different because he thinks that the higher class manipulated the lower class.

We believe that Zinn is wrong. Wrong because he is being selfish of not wanting the lower class to turn on higher class and manipulating the lower class

Zinn's ideas compared to Bailyn's are different from each other because Zinn is trying to minipulate the lower class and Bailyn is just stating his beliefs. One example is "It seemed clear to educated, upper-class colonists that something needed to be done to persuade the lower class to join the revolutionary cause.A second example is "...to fill people with anger against the British, vague enough to avoid class conflict..." A third example is "...was well suited to unite large numbers of colonist and persuade even those who had grievances against one another to turn against England." These examples support Zinn because he would do anything to persuade those have not much to lose. All these examples of the Declaration of Independence show how Zinn wanted the lower class to join his anger against the British.

We think Howard Zinn's ideas were different from Bailyn's because Zinn wanted people to go against the king and Bailyn thought that god was going to give them power.Zinn wanted to make the people go against the king because the king cut the trades with all parts of the world and they were losing money. A second reason was that they were depriving them in many cases of the benefits of trial by jury. The last reason was that the king was starting fights against the people and forced them to live near merciless Indian savages.

After reading two excerpts from two different authors, Bernard Bailyn and Howard Zinn. We have come to the idea that they both have different interpretations of the Declaration of Independence. Bailyn mentions that England is trying to enslave the colonists and that America has the potential to do well and be a role model to other countries without the British Rule. On the other hand, Howard Zinn interprets the Declaration of Independence as selfish because he believed that the aristocratic colonists were trying to manipulate the poor into holding anger and grudges against their mother country, England. One quote that supports Zinn is "...upper-class colonists believed that something needed to be done to persuade the lower-class to direct their anger against England." Another quote that supports Zinn's argument is "...vague enough to avoid class conflict." The final example that supports Zinn's beliefs are that "...the Declaration of Independence was about popular control over government." Neither arguments are either valid or invalid because it is not how it is written, it is how people interprets opinions. The comparison between Zinn and Bailyn is that Zinn believes that the Founding Fathers wrote the Declaration of Independence for selfish purposes while Bailyn believes that Declaration of Independence was written for ideological reasons.

As you can see, these authors and people have very different perspectives towards this document. In our point of view, Zinn is neither right or wrong because his opinion is to himself not everyone can agree.

In Zinn's interpretation, he stated that he wrote the declaration of independence because the upper-class persuaded the lower-class to join the revolutionary cause, to direct their anger against England. In Bernard Bailyn's claim, he stated that he wrote declaration of independence because they thought England was going to take their liberty and they wanted to protect their civil rights.

Howard Zinn's ideas are different from Bernard Bailyn's ideas because Zinn thinks that the upper-class colonists wanted to manipulate the lower-class colonists so that they wouldn't fight with the upper-class men;the lower-class men would be mad at England. He thought the upper-class colonists were selfish.Bailyn thinks that the colonists would be enslaved by England and America's destiny to become a good country.Zinn is wrong because we think all of the colonists would be affected when the King refused to pass, and forbid his governors to pass, important and necessary laws.(1&2)He has sent troops to to harass colonists and eat their food.(10)He waged war against all of the colonists by plundering their seas, ravaged the coasts, burned towns, and destroyed colonists' lives.(23&24)We think that Zinn is wrong because the actions that King George did angered all of the colonists and not just the rich people.

Bailyns ideas on why the founding fathers wrote the declaration of independence was more thinking on the colonists when he stased that the england was trying to inslave them. aslo that they thought america was destined to play a special role in history. while zinns idea was that the upper class tried to minnipulate the lower class to try and turn the lower class against england. for freedom and class conflict since the lower class out numbers the upper class and they have more to lose than the lower class. he is wrong becuase he tricked the lower class into going against england, becuase the upper class had alot to lose thats why they put the lower class aginast england.1so in clonclusion the founding fathers wrote the declaration of independence so they could prevent war against england and to put america to as a country as independence.

In Zinn's interpretation of The Declaration Of Independence he pretty much explained that the Founding Fathers wrote the DOI for selfish reasons while Bailyn did it for ideological reasons. Zinn explained that they did it because the upper class didn't want the lower class to be angry at them but instead to be angry at England. Bailyn wrote that the Founding Fathers wrote it because they believed England would take their liberty away from them, and that America can become a strong and mighty empire. I believe ZInn is wrong because I found more Grievances that affect all colonists. "He has refused to pass, and forbidden his governors to pass, important and necessary laws." this shows this against Zinn because if they cannot pass necessary laws many people can get hurt, or in trouble."He has sent swarms of British officers to harass our people and eat our food." This hurts all colonists because what if many colonists don't have food Upperclass people don't have to worry about running out of food. This is why i believe Zinn is incorrect and the Founding Fathers were ideological.

p1 Shirley Z Aaron F Bailyn thought that our founding fathers made the declaration of independence for a ideological reason. He thought that the fathers were helping everyone by becoming an independent state. Zinn thought that our founding fathers wrote the declaration of independence for a selfish reason. A example that shows that Zinn is correct is that the founding fathers didn't want a class conflict because that had much to loose so they spoke the same language as them to get them on there side and helped them fight against the Great Britain."avoid class conflict" In my opinion the Bailyn has the point. This would be because even if the founding founders did have to do some rash stuff to become independent they still had ideological ending.

Bailyn and Zinn had a totally different take on why the declaration of independence was written. Bailyn trout that they wrote the DOI because all colonists feared England would take the rest of their rights so they wanted to create a great american empire. he even wore, "England was trying to enslave them." But Zinn thought that they wrote the DOI because it would benefit the rich more.He thought that the higher class was trying to blame everything on the king so the lower class would agree. He wrote " they were trying to avoid class conflict." They both thought that the problem was England. But, Bailyn is correct because the DOI has things that benefit all people and only a couple tha had only benefit the rich.

Both Zinn's & Bailyin's different because they both have different opinions on the Declaration of Independence. for example Zinn's idea was for upper classes to get educated and for lower classes to join the revolutionary cause but he wanted to avoid class conflict. Bailyin's idea on the other hand was that they wanted to protect religious and civil rights also they though America would play a good role in history. three examples of the Decleration of independence that proves that Zinn's idea was right because it would effect everybody and there will be another war against the lower and the upper class , an example is "it seemed clear to educate the upper class & persuade the lower class to join the revolutionary cause" , "he has sent swarms of British officers to harass our people and eat our food" , "for cutting off our trade with all parts of the world;". This proves that he is wrong because it effects every class not just the rich and powerful.

Zinn and Bailyn's ideas are different from each others is that Bailyn was more concerned about the civil rights and religion of the Americans. Zinn worried about going to war or causing class conflict within themselves. Zinn is partly right because then it will cause another war within the higher and lower class which they want to avoid since there is more of the lower class. "Vague enough to avoid class conflict." To conclude, we think Zinn is actually somewhat right. Bailyn on the other hand is also right because it is also to protect our civil rights. he states that the declaration of independence represents "the colonists' deepest fears and beliefs." Bailyn is more right that Zinn. The colonists also believe that England was trying to "enslave them."

Bailyn states that america wanted to become the "Foundation of a great and mighty empire". zinn states that they should persuade the lower class to join if not they would cause a "class conflict" Zinn is wrong because he's using people that don't have anything to loose instead of using people that have things to loose.

Zinn's idea is different from Bailyn's because Zinn believes that the The Founding Fathers wrote the Declaration of Independence to manipulate the lower class. We think Bailyn is right this is because, Bailyn's idea stated that the colonist wanted was to have liberty for all the Americans. He also believed that America was destined to play a special role in history. Also, Bailyn's thesis told us that, "America would become "The Foundation of a Great and mighty Empire". One reason explaining why Zinn is wrong is because he just wanted for the rights for the rich people and not for the poor. He said the colonist wanted to manipulate the lower class to feel people with anger against the British.

Both of these historians had very convincing claims directing the purpose of the publishing the declaration of independence. Howard Zinn believed that the founding fathers wrote the Declaration of Independence to benefit themselves and
"avoid class conflict."While Bailyn believed that it was written because the founding fathers wanted to state the colonist "deepest fears and beliefs."
Zinn can be proven to be right because indeed the rich people would be affected the most because as stated in the document "imposing taxes on us without our consent" due to their wealth they would be the ones that would be affected the most. Also "refused to let others be elected" meant that the only ones that had the power to vote who to be elected were the rich because they were considered high class. Finally, once "cutting off trade around the world " would only hurt the rich because that where their luxurys came from.
Zinn was right because the rich only wanted to protect themselves.

Bailyn's idea is about the United States of America having liberty and the Great Britain not having any liberty. Bailyn's idea was also about America becoming a better role model than Britain. Zinn's idea was about the rich people trying to avoid a class conflict by turning the poor against the King.

The Declaration of Independence shows that Zinn is wrong because his ideas are only for the rich and powerful. I know this because it says in the Declaration of Independence, "He has started fights among us and has forced us to live near merciless Indian savages". What they mean by "us" are the poor people. Zinn thought that lower class needed to be persuaded to join the revolutionary cause to direct their anger to England "…listing of grievances to fill people with anger against the British…"-. Which makes it affect the colonists only because the rich people were trying to turn the poor against the King and not on them "…vague enough to avoid a class conflict…".

In conclusion I think that Bailyn's ideas are better because his are beneficial for the poor and not the rich.

Zinn's and Bailyn's idea have many things in common. One thing in common is that both ideas want peace, but in different ways. Another way they are the same is that both ideas want the poor people to be in the same class as the high class but Zinn's idea wants to have the lower class people to fight for their rights. Bailyn's idea wants the whole empire to have liberty and freedom and for everyone to equal rights. Zinn is wrong because if the poor people were to fight back they would mostly die because they have no armor,or weapons. What we think, about who had a better argument was Bailyn's idea because, Zinn wanted to fight back.

Zinn thought that the founding fathers wrote the declaration of independence because it "represents the colonists deepest fears and beliefs" and it also represents a role in history. Bailyn had different ideas than Zinn, he thought that the declaration of independence was about popular control of governments, the right of rebellion and revolution, fury at political tyranny, economic burdens, and military attack.

Zinn is right because the DIC represents the fears and beliefs. A second reason he is right is that it represents history. In the text it says "They also believed that america was destined to play a special role in history".

Zinn's idea about the Declaration of Independence is a lot different compared to Bailyn's idea of the Declaration of independence.

Zinn's idea about the Declaration of Independence is that it was all just for popular control over the government. Proof of this, is in the text it says: "..was about- popular control over the governments.."

He believes that the rich colonists persuaded the lower class to join the revolution. However, the thing was that they wouldn't really have an advantage to winning or not because they don't have the opportunities that the rich have.

Bailyn's idea about the Declaration of Independence was that the Founding Fathers believed they would be an important role in history and that they would be known as a free, liberal, and powerful country. In the text it states: "..destined to play a special role in history..the foundation of a great and mighty empire.."

I believe that Zinn's idea on the Declaration of Independence is wrong because to have a reason on writing the Declaration of Independence is a bit selfish and misuse of power. I believe that Bailyn's idea is correct.

Howard Zinn's idea to the Founding Fathers writing the Declaration of Independence is that the fathers did not want to cause any class conflict so they intended to send the poor to fight the Britains but in contrast Bailyn believed that colonist saw an evil and deliberate to crush liberty in America.

Three examples to show that Zinn was correct was that the British vague to avoid class conflict. Another reason was that he has refused to establish courts of justice and has made judges dependent on him for their jobs and salaries.

Zinn's and Bailey's ideas of the DOI the same in a way yet are very different. Zinn's idea was to fill the colonists with rage against Britain "anger against British". Bailey's idea of why the DOI was written was the colonies noticed they were being kept from freedom by the British and that God gave the colonies the power to become a land of freedom and liberty."liberty and freedom""religious""crush liberty" and "Coercive Acts".
Zinn's idea of why the DOI was written was because the founding fathers wanted to fill the colonies with anger towards Great Britain."to build patriotic feelings,""anger against the British,"and"turn against England." In our opinion we suggest that Zinn's idea is wrong because Baily's idea made more sense to us. This made sense to us because they noticed Britain's role was unfair and was keeping them from being free.

Zinn's idea was that the Americans should not have the rights to have freedom. Bailyn's idea was the opposite of Zinn's idea he thought the Americans should have freedom. Zinn is wrong, because he was with the rich "Avoid class conflict"and, "upper class colonists that something needed to be done to persuade the lower class to join the revolutionary cause" also, "Fill people with anger against the British, patriotic feelings."
In conclusion Bailyn was right after all, because it is true that everyone deserves to be free.

Zinn believed that the founding fathers manipulated the lower class into hating the king instead of the upper class,so that they would want America to become independent."It seemed clear to the educated, upper class colonists that something needed to be done to persuade the lower class to join the revolutionary cause, to direct their anger against England." Bailyn believed that they wanted America to be a role model to the rest of the world and that the founding fathers feared something bad would happen to America."The foundation of a great and mighty empire, the largest world ever saw to be founded on such principles of liberty and freedom both civil and religious.""They believed they saw an evil and deliberate conspiracy to crush in America." We believe that Zinn is wrong because the founding fathers didn't do the declaration of independence for selfish reasons, they did it to free America from England because it was a key to a better future. So, we believe Bailyn is right because his ideas of the declaration of independence is better and is more believable.

Zinns idea was that the higher classes were afraid of lower classes. They were being angry on the rich men, so they target the hate on England. Bailyns idea was that they believed that England was trying to enslave America, and to protect themselves by becoming independent. Zinn is wrong because he only deals with the rich people. Three examples from the DOI are that "He has broken up certain legislatures that opposed him and refused to let others be elected." Another example is that "he has sent swarms of britsh officers to harass our people and eat our food." The last example is that " For embossing taxes on us without our consent;"

Bailyn's ideas was when he wrote the Declaration of Independence they thought that they saw evidence was trying to conquer America by charging colonists more taxes and taking their Liberty.Another idea was they also thought that America would show others to be free.Zinn's idea was when they wrote the Declaration of Independence they wanted the lower class to hate and be against the british so, the fathers manipulated the lower class to avoid a conflict between the rich and poor.

Now were gonna give you three examples that proof Zinn right according to the declaration of independence. One of the reasons why Zinn was right is because the british king imposed taxes without letting the rich know. This affects only the rich because they have more to lose while the poor have so little. The second reason why Zinn was right was because the rich were losing money and power thanks to the british thats why they wanted independence. The rich lost money and power when the british cut off all trade which affected the rich because they made money and power trading. The final reason why Zinn was correct by saying the rich didnt want to lose poweror money was because theBritish king broke all legislatures that opposed him,and who opposed him? yes your right the rich so the king sent those whom opposed him to jail

Bernard Bailyn thought that the declaration of independence was made because the founding fathers believed that they were trying to get rid of America's freedom. Meanwhile, Howard Zinn believed that the founding fathers made the declaration of independence because they were afraid of class conflict. Because, of the classes' anger they targeted the hate on England. One example from the Declaration of Independence that shows Zinn is wrong, is because one quote is "He has passed ,and forbidden his governors to pass important laws." This shows that Zinn is wrong because the laws applied to everyone and not just the rich and powerful.

Bernard Bailyn says in the passage that the Declaration of Independence was presented to the king because the colonists believed that they saw an act of "evil" in the king trying to take away their liberty. While on the other hand Howard Zinn said that the Declaration of Independence was written to avoid "class conflict" and for the lower class to go against the king. We think that Zinn is right because the things written on the Declaration of Independence mostly affect the rich instead of the poor. One example is that the trade routes were blocked and the poor didn't really have anything to trade, but the rich did. Another example is the poor didn't have anything to pay for the taxes. The last example is that the king didn't let people get elected for legislature when the poor couldn't and the rich could.
In conclusion, Zinn seems to have more reasons on why the Declaration of Independence was written.

Howard Zinn believes that the upper class was manipulating the lower class to hate the king instead of them. This way the lower class would not get mad and disagree. On the other hand Bernard Bailyn thought that the declaration of independence was causing fear to the colonist. Colonist believed that America was a role model to the rest of the countries.

We believe that Howard Zinn is correct in his opinion that the upper class is using the lower class. To prove his statement for example, is that the king has imposed taxes on everyone without their consent. Also trade was cut off of all parts of the world affecting both rich and poor but effecting more the poor. Last example would be that swarms of British were sent out to harass the people and eat their food.

We think that Howard Zinn is correct because he is supporting the poor.

Bailyn and Howards ideas are different because Bailyn talks about America going to play a special role and the Stamp Act. And Howard only talks about getting England back because they're angry. The main idea of Bailyn in paragraph one explains about how they're planning a something bad. He states "they saw evidence of this conspiracy in the Stamp Act. In paragraph two he said they wanted America to play a special role so the rest of the world would look up to them "America was designed to play a special role". Howard said "direct anger of England" and to "aviod class conflict" which meant the upper class munipulated the lower class to turn against England. Bailyn stated "for depriving us, in many cases, of the benefits of trial by jury" it affects all because everyone could possibly go to jail. Zinn stated "he has broken up certain legislatures that opposed him, and refused to let others be elected" only rich people would be elected because only they could read. I think Bailyn is correct because they would treat people bad and the Stamp Act is an example. Also because America does kind of play a special role now.

Meanwhile, Bailyn's idea was that he and other believed England wasn't providing the fair amount of Liberty and Freedom. For example,"…saw an evil and deliberate conspiracy to crush liberty in America". One D.O.I quote that supports Zinn's claim is " for cutting off with all the parts of trade in the world." Bailyin's backup is that " He has sent swarms of people to harass our people, eat our food."

Professor Bailyn believes that we should take the Founders at their word, that the British were guilty of a "conspiracy to crush liberty." As evidence the Declaration of Independence has a whole list of complaints, or grievences, dealing with taxes, failing to pass necessary laws, and failing to defend Americans against "savage" Native Americans. Bailyn also suggests that American could be a role model for other countries interesting in the "principles of liberty and freedom," although he does not give any evidence from the Declaration to support this.

Professor Zinn sees the grievences in the Declaration very differently. The patriots complain about taxes, which fall more heavily on the rich, such as the tax on imported luxuries such as tea, or the Stamp Tax, taxing business papers, newspapers, and legal documents that would be used mostly by the upper classes.

Clearly, the leaders of the patriots were mostly the rich and powerful. It is logical to assume that they would want to protect their wealth, and their position in society. However, I think that it is interesting that they were willing to risk everything for independence -- if the King had been successful, the patriots would have been hanged, and their families would have have all property and money taken away. So I think that while the Founders might have been thinking about taking care of themselves, they knew that they had to have the support of the lower classes to be successful, and the promises of liberty and freedom meant a lot to all Americans, no matter whether they were poor or wealthy.
