Why did the Founders keep slavery in the Constitution?

When the Declaration of Independence was written in 1776, one paragraph was deleted from the rough draft -- a paragraph blaming King George III for the trans-Atlantic slave trade. After the Revolutionary War was fought and won, the Founders again faced the issue of slavery and the slave trade as they created the Constitution. During the Constitutional Convention, the Founders made the 3/5 Compromise over representation, agreed on the gradual elimination of the slave trade, and inserted a requirement to return escaped slaves to their owners. Interestingly, in none of these sections is the word "slavery" ever used.

Your task is to write a well written paragraph that includes a topic sentence and that answers the question: "What was the main reason that the Founders kept slavery in the Constitution, even though the Declaration of Independence claimed that 'all men are created equal'"?

In your paragraph, be sure to cite evidence from at least two corroborating  sources, including a primary source and a secondary source. In addition, use short quotes from the documents to support your answers.

In your conclusion, tell whether the Founders made the right decision, and why (or why not).

Don't forget to start your entry with your class period, your first name, and your last initial, for example, "P2 Thomas J"

In my opinion I think that the founders kept slavery to the constitution because they believed that, " ... blacks had lower intellectual abilities than did whites." This means that they thought blacks had less intelligence and that they could do work for them but they also thought that if they had to free them they would send them to africa. They thought this because of their color and assumed they were from africa. Benjamin Franklin was trying to pass a law by freeing all slaves and that it was wrong to have a slave and treat a human being as if they weren't one when Benjamin Franklin had owned slaves himself. If maybe he didn't own slaves that would've helped him a little bit more but other people thought that blacks were meant to be slaves just because of their color or raise. It was wrong to treat them like that because all of the slaves were human beings too, they all deserved being treated better and with respect.

Some of the main reasons the the Founders kept slavery in the Constitution were racism and their opinions. For example,John P. Khaminski believed that keeping private property is more important than freeing slaves. Also William Freehling believed that black and white people cannot live harmoniously together. He said "Jefferson suspected that blacks had lower intellectual abilities than did whites. These suspicions, together with Jefferson's fear that free blacks and whites could not live harmoniously in America, made him and others think that the only way Africans could be free was if they were sent back to Africa."

AARON F. First of all the reason why the founding fathers kept slavery in the constitution even though the declaration states that all men were created equally would be because well slaves were sold for lots of money for the rich. This means that Great Briton made lots of money with the slave train. So to win some money or some profit half of the founding fathers or the south side of them thought thought that profit was more important than there previous stated natural rights. So in conclusion the reason Why the founding fathers kept slavery because profit was more important to them than in the words people who had lower intellectual abilities than whites or slaves. Another reason could be because since the south loved slaves so much if the north ended the slave trade the south would not join the north to become one state, union, and government. "The true question is whether the southern states shall or shall not be a part of the union. if the northern states think about the profit they will not oppose the increase of slaves because they will profit from selling the goods that slaves produce."" Southern states could not be members of the union if the slave trade ended.'

The founders kept slavery in the constitution because some of the men didn't think it was a problem. One example is Mr. Rutledge. He said no because they will not oppose the increases of slaves because they will profit by selling the goods that slaves produce. "If the Northern states think about their interest, they will not oppose the increase of slaves because they will profit by selling the goods that slaves produce," said Mr. Rutledge. One man that thought it would be a problem is Mr. Ellsworth. He thought it was a problem because he's worried about the states getting separated and not working together to become stronger. "The morality or wisdom of slavery are decisions belonging to the states themselves. What enriches a part enriches the whole," said Mr. Ellsworth.

In the Declaration of Independence slavery was the issue that couldn't be agreed on. But later in time it was decided to keep it on the Constitution. I believe the main reasons that the founders kept slavery in the Constitution was because in order to have to accomplish to "fashion a new nation" they had to face many disagreements. Which will lead to help them "build a national government" or as Benjamin Franklin recalls. And also as Historian #3 states many were already favor to "end slavery." The founders made the right decision because if slavery still existed now in present day that will still be a conflict debated under the US government.

In my opinion i believe that the founders kept slaves in the Constitution because they thought that blacks weren't capable of much things, unlike the whites. I believe this because most blacks were judge by their colors and weren't thought as a high person. "... blacks had lower intellectual abilities than did whites." What this means is that the whites didn't think that the blacks were as smart as they were, so they wanted the blacks as slaves. In conclusion, i think that the Founders did not make a great decision because it wasn't right to treat a person like that or judge them by their skin color. I also think this because the blacks were the same as the whites.

The main reason the Founders kept slavery in the constitution but stated that all men are created equal was because they wanted the states to stay strong together and if they got rid of slavery the southern states wouldn't sign separating the states. Without the southern states, the states would be a lot weaker military wise making us lose wars and our land. Most of the Founders thought having a united Country was more important than ending slavery. This is stated by Benjamin Franklin, "I agree to this Constitution with all it's faults because i think a federal government necessary for us... we have to accept some of these disagreements in order to build a national government. And Mr. Williamson said " Southern states could not be members of the Union if the slave trade ended. It is wrong to force any thing that is not absolutely necessary , and which any state must disagree to.

I think they left slavery in the constitution because no one was able to make up their minds on it. There was an equal amount of men who though slavery was wrong and others who saw slaves as property. The northern states wanted to get rid of slavery but the southern states didn't want to. The southern states had more slaves and relied on them a lot so they weren't ready to get rid of them. Mr. Rutledge "didn't see slaves as people, he saw them as property." I think the founders made the right decision since it is more important for a stable union and everyone had different opinions on wether to keep slavery or not.

Slavery was a big problem when writing the Constitution. Southern states couldn't agree with the northern states. The southern states used slaves to help grow crops. Without them it would be harder to grow crops and the south wont make as much money. Some of The Founding Fathers were also a little worried because if they didnt sign, southern states wouldn't work with us and we would become separated. If we are attacked we will most likely b defeated because we are know a smaller group. The bigger the group the more power we have."What enriches a part enriches a whole"-Mr.Ellsworth.

The main reasons why the founders kept slavery in the constitution was because slaves at that time were really important part in economy and some states didnt want to give their salves since they produced everything and others like the southerners thought their slaves were their property. a Founder like john rutledge thought that it was more important to keep the states together than to worry about slaves.historian 3 says it was more important to keep the slaves if they were to free them it would cause economic implications.

There are a lot of reasons for why our founding fathers kept slavery in the constitution, even though they said that all me were created equal.
The men at the Constitutional Convention never considered getting rid of slavery. The Revolutionary talk of freedom and equality had been left behind; Americans in general and the men at the Convention in particular wanted a united, well-ordered, and prosperous society in which private property – including slave property – would be secure. The Founders kept slavery in the Constitution because they wanted to have a Union that included all the states. But if they were to ban slavery, the southern states wouldn't sign the Constitution and wouldn't be part of the Union.I got this when Mr. Williamson said, "Southern states could not be part of the Union if the slave trade ended." The Founders kept slavery because they believed that making a Union was more important than ending slavery. Also they didn't think they should be worried about ending slavery right now. Some, like Mr. Ellsworth believed that it was up to the states to decide whether they wanted to keep slaves or not. So he thought the Southern states can keep slave trade as long as they sign the Constitution. The main reason was mostly because they wanted to have a union but the southern states really wanted to keep slaves.

In conclusion, I think that they made the right decision because they couldn't really make a perfect constitution and that is good enough. I got this when Benjamin said,"We have to accept some of these disagreements.."

There were many reasons why the founding fathers decided to keep slavery in the constitution, even though the Declaration of Independence claimed that "all men are created equal."The first reason was that the south's economy was dependent on the labor of African-Americans. However, the northern states owned the ships that were used to transport slaves. In other words the northern states had nothing to lose. Therefore, in order to maintain a well-ordered, and prosperous society in which private property such as slaves would be secure, they decided to keep slavery in the constitution. An example that supports this idea is Historian number 1.My textual evidence is "Americans in general and the men at the convention in particular wanted a well- ordered society that would keep private property secured."Mr.ellsworth did not have a problem with slavery because he believed that having a union was more important.I personally believe that the founding fathers made the right decision because it was the only way in which they could be a union.

I believe that the reason why the Founders kept slavery in the constitution, even though the Declaration of Independence stated that all men are created equal is because if the Fathers wanted to end slavery the southern states wouldn't agree to making an entire union with other states. The southern states thought that ending the slave trade was a bad choice because they needed slaves for things such as making profit by selling the goods the slaves produced and to some people like Mr. Rutledge in this case, religion and humanity didn't matter. You can find evidence when Mr. Rutledge says,"Religion and humanity have nothing to do with this...if the northern states think about their interest, they will not oppose the increase of slaves because they will profit by selling the goods that slaves produce."

I think that the Fathers made the right decision because if they had said no that they were going to end slavery the southern states wouldn't have agreed to making a union and we wouldn't be the union that we are today.

The reason why they kept slavery was because they knew that it was a problem but didn't put it in the declaration of independence because the southern states would not sign if they were to take there slaves away and free them. The reason the Founders kept the slavery in the constitution, even though the Declaration of Independence claimed that "all men are equal" are for the reason that they state that they thought "the revolutionary talk of freedom and equality had even left behind." It also says that they wanted a untied, well order, and also the prosperous society in which private property that may include the slave property and would be safe. One people that agreed that this was a problem (slavery should stop) was Mr.Benjamin Fracklin . He agreed that to make a untied union you need to make thing equal and that yes their might be disagreement with some of the citizens but that their had to be equal rights for everyone.

The founding fathers kept slavery even though the declaration says that all men are created equal for many reasons. One of the reasons is because, a lot of people wanted to keep slaves for them to sale the profit that the slaves made such as rice, and tobacco. Another reason why people wanted slaves was because when they were making the declaration they didn't want to sign it when they said it wasn't right to have slaves they said they would not sign it. The final reason is because people just wanted them to "have a better colony."

Our secondary source is that if their was no slave trade , their will be no union ,which u need a union to have the united states .They made a bad decision because the slaves are hum a to not property to sell.

The main reasons that the founders kept slavery in the constitution is because they won’t able to make trades anymore because there is no more slave trade,so there won’t be no more money that the slaves make that give the founding founders profit. They said that southern states won’t be members of the union if slave traded ended because most slaves are in the southern. The quote to support this is “increase of slaves because they will profit by selling the goods that produce. The founding fathers made the wrong decision because slaves were humans too like them. The founding fathers just cared for themselves, slaves were not property or animals they are human too.

The main reasons that the founders kept slavery in the constitution was because the triangle trade was the only way for the north to get supplies and get profit from using their ships. Also most of the founders said that they had no problem with slavery.Another reason was that when they were making the declaration they didn't want to sign it when they said it wasn't right to have slaves they said they would not sing it.

The main reasons that the Mr. Rutledge kept slavery in the Constitution, even though the Declaration of Independence claimed that 'all men were created equal"was because the Northern States think about their interests , they will not oppose the increase of slaves. The reason that Mr. Ellsworth kept slavery was that this person feels that the morality or wisdom of slavery are decisions belonging to the states. The reason that Mr. Williamson kept slavery was that it was wrong to force anything that isn't necessary, and which any state must disagree to. The reason that Benjamin Franklin kept slavery was that he says that we have to accept some disagreement in order to build a national government this was more important than ending slavery. The founders kinda did the right thing because some of the founders said that they want to get rid of slavery and the other founders don't mind anything about slavery.

The founding fathers kept slavery in the Constitution even though the declaration says that all men are created equal for many reasons. One of the reasons is because they said "let every state do what it pleases". Another reason is that when they were making the Declaration they wouldn't sign it if it had the right to not own slaves. They made the right decision because a government was more important.

Why was slavery kept in the constitution? In my opinion slavery was kept in the constitution because not many of the founding fathers had problems with slavery or an issue against it.I believe this because it seemed beneficial to the southern part. To support my opinion here is a quote from one of the founding fathers, "... They will not appose the increase of slaves because they will profit by selling the goods that slaves produce"-Mr.Rutledge. According to Mr.Ellsworth it seemed as if he care if slavery was or wasn't in the constitution because he says,"Let Every state do what it pleases. What enriches a part enriches a whole.'' In conclusion I believe that in general the main reason why slavey wasn't out of the constitution was because the northern and southern delegates would be divided and the southern states (who produced goods by slaves) wouldn't be in the union.

The main reason that the founders kept slavery in the constitution was because most of them didn't believe that slavery was a real problem in society. The founders knew that all men were created equal thanks to the Declaration of Independence but that didn't change the founders mind. Some of the founders were aware that slavery was a problem but they thought other things were more important. For example some historians never considered getting rid of slavery. "The men at the Constitutional Convention never considered getting rid of slavery. The Revolutionary talk of freedom had been left behind..."Historian #1.

The main reasons the Founding Fathers kept slavery in the Constitution, even though the Declaration of Independence claimed that all men are created equal because they needed the southern delegates to sign the Constitution. They needed the southern delegates to sign the Constitution so they could help fight the king and his army. Without the south there would of had been more of a chance that the U.S. would lose the fight and not been able to become its own united nation. Finally, I believe that the Founders made the wrong decision because if all men were created equal why did they still abuse of a different race. Another reason I believe the founders made the wrong decision is that the south would of still crawled back and asked to join the U.S. because they were going to be a small and weak "country".

The founding fathers keep slavery in the constitution , witch saying that all men were created equal because the north and south would disagree on this slavery. the north would say to free all the slaves and forget about slavery because becoming a country was more important. on the other hand the southern people would disagree on this slavery plan because they wanted to keep to keep their slaves but also become a country. but southern states couldn't have both slavery and become a free state. Also if the northern people removed this paragraph the southern people would sign the Decloration of Independence. so northern delegates agreed to free the slaves while the southern delegates did not. Evidence to prove this would be, like how Mr. Williams said "Southern states could not be members of the Union if the slave trade ended. It was wrong to force any thing that is not absolutely neccessary, and which any state must disagree to." also the southern states did not want to free their slaves becuase slaves were seen as property not people. Evidence to support this would be from historian #1, "The men at the constitional convention considered getting rid of slavery. The revolutional talk of freedom and equality had been left behind; Americans in general and the men at the convention in particular wanted a united, well-ordered,and prosperous society in which private propperty- including slave property-would be secure."
Also later on in 1787, slavery would end and there will be no more slaves, they will all be free.

Historians wonder why the Founders kept slavery in the constitution even though the Declaration of Independence claimed that all men are created equal.

Not all the founders agreed to not having slavery in the nation. One reason is that some of the founders thought other things were important and slavery was the least of their problems. Another reason is that some of the founders thought it was a good idea to keep slavery so that they could make a good profit out of their goods.

Mr.Ellsworth thought that the states should do as they please because the states are a whole and would decide whether they wanted slavery to continue within themselves. One piece of evidence is, "The morality or wisdom of slavery are decisions belonging to the states themselves."

Mr.Rutledge thought that if they were to give up slavery that there would be no goods in their nation and it would ruin the trade between other countries. He thought that they could make a good profit by selling the black people's goods.

However, some of the founders disagreed to these opinions. Mr.Williamson had a problem with slavery. He understood from the Declaration of Independence that it was wrong to force anything that was absolutely necessary. "It is wrong to force anything that is not absolutely necessary.."

In conclusion, i think that the founders made the wrong decision because they were basically disobeying the Declaration of Independence and treating slaves different from others when all men are created equal.

per.5 Stephanie p. The Founders kept slavery even though the declaration stated that all men were created equal because southern and northern delegates were disagreeing on whether keeping slaves or letting them free. Southern delegates said that they would not sign the declaration of independence if slavery was removed. Some delegates did agree on letting slaves free ( the northern delegates). An example to prove this is Mr. Williamson he states that slavery is a problem because "its is unnecessary to have states disagree over slavery."Someone who opposed the thinking of Williamson was Benjamin Franklin believed slavery was not a problem because he thought everyone was being selfish and agreeing on whatever was best for them. Selfish, for example like Mr. Rutledge who thought slaves weren't a problem because he lived slavery it would make money and slaves. Mr. Rutledge had similar thinking to Historian 1 who believed that slavery was only "private property."I believe that the Founders made the right decision in taking slavery out and letting slaves free because everyone has the right to be free and have liberty.

The main reason of why the founders kept slavery was because if they didn't keep slavery the Southern wouldn't be part of the union. Mr. Rutledge didn't have a problem with slavery but he mentioned the true question was that if the South shall or shall not be part of the union. He also said that the North should be selfish to make profit out of what the slaves make and we not oppose to increase the population of the slave. "The true question at present is whether the Southern states shall or shall not be part of the union." Historian 3 also said that he did had a problem with slavery but he also wanted to have one fully and well ordered nation or union. Benjamen Franklin also had did also have a problem with slavery but he said that some times you have to disagree on some decisions like taking away slavery because if there is no slavery then there will be no country and South wont join the union. The founders make a great decision because this would lead to their country and now they would also have a union. Now the founders would have their own dependent country with slavery tho favor both the South and the North. This would allow them to trade good with the slaves, also trade lots of gold, and to trade all the goods the slaves would make.

There are many different and bazaar reasons as to why the Founding Fathers decide to keep slavery in the constitution. One reason as to why the Founders of the constitution was because Rutledge believed that both the northern and the southern benefited from what "The goods that slaves produced." Ellsworth believed that they kept slavery in the constitution because every state has the right to do what they please with the slave situation. "Let every state do what it pleases." Williamson is not against slavery because he said,"It is wrong to forces anything that is not absolutely necessary." Benjamin Franklin said,"we have to accept some disagreements in order to build a national government." This means that he is against slavery but is willing to exclude slavery in the constitution in order to form a new nation.

Some other historians say that the founding fathers did this ,excluding slaves in the constitution, because of many different reasons. A historian said that the Founding Fathers were racist. "The Founding Fathers' racism [was] a barrier to antislavery."The other historian said,"the founding fathers were counting the slaves as property. The last historian said that the Fathers did this in order to create a new nation, kind of what Benjamin was saying.

In my opinion the founding fathers made the wrong decision because they could have ended slavery in the north. Later, the south will suffer the consequences of being alone with no way of protection or allies. The south would then want to go under the safety of the United States. The south would then have to agree to let the slaves free.

The founders kept slavery in the Constitution because if they didn't, the Southerners would seperate from the Union(United States). So, they kept slavery in the constitution for they could have a bigger, stronger nation. Benjamin Franklin did not like slavery, but he said that he would have to deal with it because he wanted a stronger, bigger nation. To have that, he had to agree to have slavery in the constitution so the Southerners won't seperate from the Union. Benjamin Franklin says,"When you assemble a large group of men, you will inevitably find that they will disagree with each other about their local interest, and their selfish views." Benjamin Franklin refers the men as our Union, and what he is saying is that even though some men have disagreements on some tings, they are powerful and stronger together and its better to stick together. If they didn't put slavery in the constitution, the Southerners would seperate from the Union. A point of view from a Southerner is a man named Mr. Williamson. He said that the slave trade was a good thing and he felt that the Union wanted to end the slave trade. He said if they did end it, the Southern states would seprate from the Union. He states, " Southern states could not be members of the Union if the slave trade ended." This proves that the constitution had to keep slavery in the constitution to be a bigger, stronger, Union. If they didn't keep slavery, the Southerners would seperate from the Union which would make the Union weak. I think the Founders made the right decision because in my opinion, although the slave trade was wrong, they had no other choice but to keep slavery in the Constitution to have a bigger, stronger, Union(nation), and so the Southern states wouldn't have seperated from the Union. Because the Southern states are not seperated from the Union, the Union is stronger and bigger together.

The main reasons why the Founders kept slavery in the Constitution was that many people were arguing about slavery and didn't know whether to end slavery or to keep slavery. It is wrong to force anything that isn't nessecary to make someone do something.

The Founding fathers made many decisions to help build America into the great nation it is today, but there is one subject that the Founding Fathers couldn't all agree on. That subject was the freedom of slaves. In Thomas Jefferson's first draft of the Declaration of Independence the article of slavery was introduced and was later taken out because of all the confusion within that matter. Later, again the subject (slavery) was "ignored"because the constitution couldn't reach a decision. Some reasons the Found Fathers still kept slavery in the constitution was majorly because the issue would divided many of the people. Some Thought that making a better nation was more important than dealing with the issue of slavery for example, one of those men were Benjamin Franklin."We have to accept some of these disagreements in order to build a nation government." Another man was Mr.Williamson he didn't think slavery was a problem because just like Benjamin Franklin, he thought building a Union was more important. In conclusion I think the Founding Fathers made the right act. Even though slavery was wrong the subject of dealing with making a national government was more important. For example if the founders freed the slaves at that time many people from the South would probably respond in violence and would throw the government into chaos.

They kept slaves in the constitution because historian 1 shows that they could take your private property away which also includes slaves, houses and etc. The evidence for this is "...wanted a united,well-ordered,and prosperous society in which private property-including slave property-would be secure". Another person is Benjamin Franklin, he had a problem because his opinion is a natural government is more important than slavery. the evidence is "I agree to this constitution with all its faults because i think a federal government is necessary for us". Mr. Williamson is similar to Benjamin Franklin's.The founders didn't make the right decision because slaves aren't supposed to be taken, that is one of your private properties.

The founders kept slavery in the constitution even though they were many different types of opinions. Benjamin Franklin agreed to this constitution saying that "I think a federal government necessary for us","we have to accept some of the disagreements in order to build a national government." He meant that he agreed to this that sometimes it is hard to accept selfish views that others may have. Eventually out of all the three historians all infrenced that slavery was important , including Benjamin Franklin. Historian number one said that everyone deserved private property including slaves, historian number two said that the only way they could free slaves was if they were sent back to africa for the reason that racism was going to exsist , and America wouldnt live harmoniously. Finally Historian number three infer that slavery had an important economic implications.Yet Mr Rutledge, Mr Ellsworth , Mr williamson agred no, that slavery wasnt important.
In conclusion there was four people voting yes and three voting no. "The founding fathers were determined to fashion anew nation that they were to b ring an end to slavery."In my opinion I think that it was the right choice to let slavery come to an end . All me are all the same there shouldnt be any descrimiation between and type of race .

The reason the Founding Fathers kept slavery even though they said that "All Men Are Equal" is because if the Founding Fathers agreed to get rid of slavery the Southern States would just walk out. The founding Fathers wanted to bring a new nation instead of bringing an end to slavery."The Founding Fathers were more determined to fashion a new nation than they were to bring an end to slavery." Benjamin Franklin did have a problem with slavery but he knew if he didn't agree to not to end slavery the Northern states would just walk out, so he had no choice to just agree to it so the Southern States wont walk out."I agree to this Constitution with all its faults because I think a federal (national) government necessary for us." Mr. Ellsworth didn't have a problem with slavery because the decisions of slavery belong to the states themselves and whatever they do they end up doing it too. "Let every state do as it pleases. the morality or wisdom of slavery are decisions belonging to the states themselves."
In conclusion, i do not think they did the right decision because its just breaking the law that "All Men Are Equal".

The constitution decided to keep slavery because without the south then the Declaration Of Independence wouldn't have the signatures it needed. To become an Independent Country the south had to sign the Declaration Of Independence. Mr. Rutledge didn't want to agree with the Declaration Of Independence because he had slaves in the south and without his slaves he feels that he would have no more power. Mr. Jefferson wanted to end slavery and he also wanted all people to be equal and free. Rutledge says this has nothing to do with equal rights. So in order to end slavery they had to take out Jefferson's Paragraph or else the south would've never singed the Declaration and we wouldn't have the state that we have today.

The reason why the D.O.I. didn't have it because founders faced the issue of the slavery while they were creating the constitution. Because of this the the founders made the 3/5 compression over the representation. They all agreed with it with the gradual elimination of slavery. If the slaves escaped they have to be returned to there rightful owners. Since the constitution had it there was no point on having it on the D.O.I., but while the constitution was being created the northern and the southern were planing on being apart. The southern wants to be apart of the union. The northern don't want the southern to leave. If the slave trade was gone the southern wouldn't be part of the union. So to not make a big deal out of it they put it in the constitution instead of the D.O.I.

Why did the founders keep slavery in the constitution?

As the Revolutionary war had been won. There was and upbringing conflict of slavery. The 3/5 compromise was accepted in representation; but whether or not slavery should exist was unknown, at the time. Many of the Founding Fathers had their buts and ifs. Some thought that if slavery was unaccepted the " southern states" wouldn't wan't or won't be part of the union. For example,Mr. Williamson, " Southern states would never be part of the union if the slave trade ended." This shows fear of the southern states not being part of the union. In addition others thought of americas own interest. Mr. Rutledge thought slavery benefited both sides (northern and southern); "if the northerns think about their own interest, they will not oppose to the increase of slaves.... profit.. selling goods that the slaves produce." Another example of why it was allowed was Benjamin Franklin. He thought that having a government was worth keeping slavery in america. " I agree to this constitution will all it's faults , because I think a federal government is necessary." Also, Ellsworth thought that the states shall do as it pleases it will make the nation whom they are.
In conclusion, I think that the Founding Fathers id the right thing. If they didn't sacrifice slavery existing, then the U.S wouldn't e complete. Although I think slavery should have never existed in the first place.

The founding fathers kept the slavery in the constitution even though the Declaration of Independence claimed that "all men are created equal" because the majority of them believed that a civil and strong union is more important than trying to abolish slavery. "We have to accept some of these disagreements in order to build a national government" as stated by Benjamin Franklin. One of the reasons that they kept it is because if they took it out, half of the country, the southern states, wouldn't have signed the Constitution. Another reason is because if they did not have the southern states on their side, they would've lost against Great Britain. Another reason is that a government that forced other members of the union to agree to what is being said is wrong and working our disagreements with compromises is the way to go. "It is wrong to force anything that is not absolutely necessary, and which any state must disagree to." - Mr. Williamson
I believe that the founders made the right decision even though slavery is an awful thing and it should have been abolished, they still made a compromise that made the states civil and formed a strong government. They're decision led to what America is today and I would not change a single thing about it.

M. Albert said...

There were three theories about why the Founders kept slavery in the Constitution. The key is to see which one has corroboration. First was Historian #1, Mr. Kaminski. His idea was that private property and economics, a "well ordered and prosperous society," was the Founders first priority. His view was supported by Mr. Rutledge, who noted that both North and South profited from the slave trade.
The second theory was by Mr. Hall, historian #3. Hall says it's all about creating a new nation rather than worrying about slavery. Benjamin Franklin, who says that they had to accept some "disagreements," such as slavery, both Ellsworth and Williamson support that view.
Although historian #2, Mr .Freehling, makes the point about racism being the reason the Founders kept slavery in the Constitution, none of the statements of the Founders corroborate that thesis.
Were the Founders right in their decision. It is hard to say for sure, although we know that eventually slavery would come back to cause the worst war in U.S. history, the Civil War. However, they did have to make tough decisions, and I have to respect that. I think that the best idea would have been to gradually reduce slavery, such as was done with the slave trade. One idea was the children of slaves would be free, although the parents would remain slaves. Another idea would be to reduce the 3/5 compromise to 2/5 in 10 years, 1/5 in 20 years, and to 0/5 in 30 years. That would also serve to get rid of slavery, and might have been supported by the South.
