Manifest Destiny was the idea in the 19th century that the destiny of the United States was to spread from the east coast to the Pacific Ocean. However, even though we look at the idea today and realize that people such as the Native American Indians and the country of Mexico might have suffered under Manifest Destiny, it was very popular at the time.

I personally believe that Manifest Destiny is wrong because it was used as a justification to do inhumane actions such as removing indians from their lands to satisfy American beliefs.I believe that the reasons presented are valid because they each justify their opinions about Manifest Destiny and the significance of the term. Although,not everyone was in agreement with Manifest Destiny,they also gave reasons to why they believe it was wrong.Therefore, I believe that the reasons presented were legitimate because overall Manifest Destiny was a very popular idea in the 19th century.

The idea of manifest destiny and whether it is legitimate is out of the question. The answer may vary per person. Some one might not believe it was a good reason as they don't believe in god and others, who might be extremely religious, may think it was. Even so, religious people's beliefs might vary as well. that is more of an opinion that i won't answer than a fact.

So many people had different reasons at the time to justify Manifest Destiny. But are their reasons legitimate? Well I think the reasons are not legitimate. For example thinking that God has gave them that mission to grow isn’t legitimate. No one can tell what God wants. So they can’t tell if it is their mission from God. They may assume that but it doesn't mean it’s valid. Thinking that Mexico’s leaders are imbeciles may not be a valid reason either. They could have their reasons to believe this but you can’t really justify it with good reasons. Also believing that the growth of the U.S. is unstoppable isn’t valid either. Many things could happen throughout time that may stop and even decrease their growth. So their is no reason to believe that thats how its meant to be. But the truth is I think its what they believe. They all have their reasons even though you can never tell what will happen.

Their reasons were not legitimate because not everyone believed it was actual destiny. If it was destiny than everyone would agree. And that of saying MD will come true because of their army being to strong is not a valid reason because later on instead of becoming stronger they lose the war of Vietnam. In the New York Evening Post, they think that Mexico shouldn't have custody of a beautiful country because they think Mexicans won't take care of it properly. O' Sullivan thought that it would help the settlers if they would go west since God had gone West. Each of them had good reasons on why they did or didn't approve the Manifest Destiny.

Some people saw Manifest Destiny as a good thing because they saw an opportunity to overspread the continent filled with providence for the free development of their yearly multiplied millions. Newspaper editor, John L. Sulivan states, "Our Manifest Destiny [is] to overspread the continent allotted by providence for the free development of our multiplying millions.".
Another reason why people supported Manifest Destiny was because they felt that Mexico's leaders were imbecile and distracted with other things, not paying any attention to their territory. The Democratic Review newspaper states, "..Mexico['s leaders are]... imbecile[s] and distracted... The Anglo-Saxon foot is already on its borders...".
Many Americans felt that Mexico's people were ignorant cowards and profligate ruffians, and they don't deserve the land they claim theirs. Which is why they supported Manifest Destiny. The New York Evening Post newspaper states, "Now we ask, whether any man can coolly contemplate the idea of recalling our troops from the [mexican] territory we at present occupy...and...resign this beautiful country to the custody of the ignorant cowards and profligate ruffians who have ruled it for the last twenty-five years?"
There reasons were not legitimate because the Americans didn't have a right to take over territory that wasn't there's. If it were the Americans having their land taken from them, they wouldn't like it. However, they didn't care about who they had to get through.

This was written by Democratic Review and his quote to supporting this statement was " Mexico's leaders are...imbecile[s] and distracted." O' Sullivan and his quotes to supporting this was "beginning of a new history" and "connects us with a new history." This statement was written by DeBow's Commercial Review and his quote was " The Americans will spread out beyond their present bounds. We have New Mexico and California! In my opinion all these reasons are legitimate because of how they list the reasons of why they support Manifest Destiny and why are the causes of them supporting the Manifest Destiny. These give a lot of information of why and how they supported the Manifest Destiny.

People at the time justified Manifest Destiny as their right and deed to accomplish. For them Manifest Destiny was the future of the United States which was expanding their land from the east to the west. They believed this because they thought God had chosen them (Americans) and only them for this task as of what John L. O' Sullivan says, " God has chosen America for this mission among all nations." Another quote in which shows how they justified Manifest Destiny is ," Have not results in Mexico taught the invincibility of American arms?... The Americans will spread out far beyond their present bounds.", this shows how they believed that the reason they were invincible was to spread the U.S even further than were they were originally. On last quote that supports my idea of Manifest Destiny is where President Polk says "... invaded our territory and shed american blood upon american soil." this means that Polk believed there was a need for war or he just wanted an excuse for war to get Texas a part of the united states.
In my opinion these reasons weren't valid especially what polk said because no one knew where the border was and everyone knew polk was going to do whatever it takes to expand the u.s further to the west.

These reasons are not legitimate. They are not legitimate because those are all opinions, other people thought differ. Just how people had their justifications towards Manifest Destiny others had their others had justifications against Manifest Destiny.

Without fertile lands they would not be able to grow cotton and need to import it from other places at a larger expense. The Debow's Commmerical Review also said that America will expand to even greater land and will have 100 states, "The Americans will spread out far beyond their present bounds." I say that there reason weren't legitimate because a popular reason why they said it was their destiny was because "God" said so. This reason is not legitimate because all they said was that God said so and that was it. In my eyes they had no prove of God coimg down to Earth and saying "Go forth and expand your emipire all the way to the Pacific." I think this wasn't a legitimate reason enough to take over the land in the west and claiming it as there own. Also the Debow's commercial review said that they shall expand and they gave no reasons why. The Democratic Review said that America is a nation of progress, but they shouldn't of bully a counry that they said they would protect and not conquer.

Manifest Destiny was the idea in the 19th century that the United States had the destiny, or the right, or the obligation to extend from the east to the west coast. According to O'Sullivan, the continent was our because God blessed our "mission of progress and individual freedom." The Democratic Review and New York Evening Post thought taking over the continent was inevitable since Mexico's leaders were incompetent -- how could we not take advantage of that? President Polk justifies taking land from Mexico as self-defense -- "American blood has been spilled on American soil." DeBow's Commercial review felt that our military power justified extending our nation. Finally, Thoreau, who was against Manifest Destiny, felt all those reasons were just an excuse to cover up the real reason -- allowing slavery to expand.
Was it a legitimate idea? Spreading democracy and freedom are good ideas, but I wonder whether forcing people to accept them is an acceptable way of doing it. Maybe we could have been a good example, and others would have chosen to follow our lead.

In the cases, Bernard Bailyn's main idea is that America should be a the largest empire of liberty and freedom, although Howard Zinn's main idea is that someone should persuade the lower class to be angry at England. Mr.Bailyn states that America would be "founded on such principles of liberty and freedom." In Howard Zinn's case, he states that the " solution was to find language to all classes," and listing all the negatives on England, " to fill people with anger against the British." In the Declaration of Independence [D.O.I], the quote " that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." This quote supports Bernard Bailyn's claim. Another quote from the D.O.I," government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it," which means that if England do not give general rights they are able to fight the government.This supports Howard Zinn. In conclusion, I believe that Howard Zinn is correct because if England isn't treating Americans with general rights we should fight them and persuade others to follow. Is plan is selfish because the rich won't be be fighting like the poor, but is intensions are helping all.

Bailyn's ideas about why the declaration of independence was written had more idealogical reasons than Zinn's. Zinn's ideas on why the declaration of independence was written included more selfish reasons. Bailyn's main idea on why the declaration of independence was written was because the colonists believed there was a conspiracy that the colonists were getting their rights taken away by britain. Evidence from this excerpt is the quotes " they ( the colonists) believed they saw an evil and deliberate conspiracy to crush liberty in america. " and " they saw evidence of this conspiracy in the stamp act and the coercive( intolerable) acts." Zinn's main idea on why the declaration of independence was written was because the upper class colonists wanted the lower class colonists to direct their anger at the british and not the rich people. The upper class colonists acheived this by "listing greivances to fill people with anger at the british." this is exactly what the declaration of independence was about. the upper class colonists wanted the lower classes to join the revolution beause theres more of them. you cant start a revolution without alot of people on your side. another reason is because the lower classes have more patriotism. they were willing to die for their rights. bailyn's ideas about why the declaration of independence was written contained more idealogical reasons, meanwhile zinn's ideas contained more selfish reasons. i think that zinn is more correct about why it was written than bailyn. like i said above, bailyn's ideas were more based off the colonists' beliefs and was backed up by actions in history. meanwhile zinn used more selfish reasons as to why the declaration of idependence was written. he actually used examples of what the declaration of independence contained to back up why the lower classes started a war with the british. therefore, i think zinn is more correct because he showed more examples.

Bailyn said that he wanted" the foundation of a great and mighty empire, the largest the world ever saw to be founded on such principles of liberty and freedom, both civil and religious." The main idea of Howard Zinn was to get the lower class(poor people) to get mad at England so they wouldn't get blamed. "It seemed clear to the educated, upper-class colonists that something needed to be done to persuade the lower class to join the revolutionary cause, to direct their anger against England." The Declaration supports Bailyn because they both want whats best for America and want it to be to Flourishing. The Declaration of Independence states "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.” This quote supports Bailyn because its saying that that they want liberty and the pursuit of happiness which is exactly what Bailyn is stating. The Declaration supports Zinn because he said that not everybody was included in the Declaration of Independence that a lot of people were left out. The Declaration of Independence clearly states “We, hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created” this means it is only men. I think Zinn is correct because not everyone is included in the Declaration and that is unfair.
